Yumei Hou (b. 1952) is a master of traditional Chinese folk arts whose work bridges ancient heritage and contemporary public life. Born in Jilin Province, China, she was awarded the prestigious title of “Folk Arts and Crafts Artist” by UNESCO in 1995.
She is renowned for her extraordinary technical mastery and improvisational speed, often completing intricate paper-cuts in mere minutes. For Hou, the act of creation is a live performance, transforming traditional craft into a dynamic cultural exchange.
Now a cornerstone of the San Francisco arts community, her large-scale murals—Northeastern Yangge: Celebrating the New Year and The Wedding—are permanently installed at the Chinatown–Rose Pak Station. This presentation, hosted by Unbound Books & Coffee, celebrates the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary community life.
