S/Z

S/Z is a landmark theoretical work, representing both a development of Roland Barthes's literary thought and a milestone in the shift from so-called structuralism to post-structuralism. This landmark shift marks Barthes's shift from his previous approach, which solely applied semiotics and structuralist narratology to the linguistic and literary theories that treated literary works as complete objects, as relatively independent and holistic spiritual phenomena, to a deconstructive approach that views literary works as texts, a dynamic process of textual formation, characterized by fragmentation, divergence, and playfulness.
