Li Shenzhi, former Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and President of the Chinese Association for American Studies. Born in Wuxi in 1923, he graduated from Yenching University with a degree in economics in 1945. He later joined Xinhua Daily and Xinhua News Agency, where he was responsible for editing and publishing "Reference Materials" and "Reference News" for high-level internal reading. He served as a diplomatic secretary or advisor to Zhou Enlai, Deng Xiaoping, and Zhao Ziyang, and accompanied them on overseas visits. He was the chief drafter of the international section of the Central Work Report for the 12th National Congress of the CPC. In 1957, he was labeled a "Rightist" for advocating "Great Democracy." In 1980, he was responsible for establishing the Institute of American Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and served as its first director. In 1985, he became Vice President of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Director of the Institute of American Studies. He retired after 1989. In his later years, he dedicated himself to the study of liberalism and was hailed as a leading figure in Chinese thought at the turn of the century. In 1999, his work "Fifty Years of Trials and Tribulations – A Soliloquy on National Day Eve" shook China and abroad, making it an instant sensation. He passed away in Beijing in 2003.
