About Book
"Can you really learn to walk?"
"If I want to design my own walking route, are there any tips?"
"How can I see clearly what's going on on the street?"
When the pandemic restricted movement and many people questioned their lives, they began to seek new pleasures in their cities, and walking gradually became a trend. Then, some people asked, what should we look at while walking?
A unique building, a quiet and elegant path, a space where people can move freely – these places that showcase the beauty of a city are often sought after. However, during our daily walks, we often encounter more ordinary urban components.
When we observe carefully, we can recognize aspects of the city we've never noticed through familiar components. We can even read the details placed in the city, such as objects that bear witness to the times, such as signs and telephone booths; the information being transmitted, such as advertisements and graffiti; and we can discover nature in the city, not just country parks, but also the commonly encountered stone wall trees and shop cats.
Strolling through the city reveals more than we imagine, and more interesting things to see. Urban researcher Huang Yuxuan uses Hong Kong as a starting point, exploring architecture, paths, spaces, objects, information, and nature to guide us through daily observation, deepening our understanding, and ultimately, our love for a city.
"This is dedicated to all those who have survived this pandemic, in different parts of the world. Let's continue walking together, deriving joy from city walks, reflecting on the essence of cities, and building deep relationships with places."
