"Siddhartha" is not the story of Buddha, it tells the story of a man's life, a life that millions of ordinary people will also experience.
A young man full of ambition often believes he is chosen by fate. Leaving behind the past, he follows his stumbling steps, searching for his inner voice, pursuing fame and fortune, experiencing friendship, and savoring love. However, Siddhartha's lifelong pursuit is the harmony and unity of life. While seemingly grand, it is indeed a question that no one can avoid.
Hesse's language is imbued with poetry, as exemplified by the subtitle of this book, "An Indian Poem," which, for unknown reasons, has been omitted in previous editions. To best capture Hesse's poetic spirit, we have chosen a literal translation from the German. Although our translation cannot fully capture this poetic quality, the essence and spirit of the poem remain unmistakable.
The status of this book has been repeatedly emphasized in previous versions - it was Henry Miller's favorite; it influenced many celebrities and scholars including Radiohead; it sparked a craze for reading Hesse in the United States in the 1960s, with every college student holding a copy, etc.
But as Siddhartha, who becomes a ferryman in the book, says, wisdom cannot be shared, it can be discovered and experienced.
