Young Siddhartha, weary of his Brahmin life, leaves with his friend Govinda to follow the Samanas. In Savathi, they listen to the teachings of the Buddha Gotama. Govinda chooses to follow Gotama, while Siddhartha continues his spiritual journey. In a city, he meets the courtesan Kamala and begins to pursue carnal desires and worldly success, until he becomes weary of it all. He abandons the secular world once again, determined to end his life. By the river, in a moment of despair, he hears the sound of the water... Hermann Hesse, writer, poet, painter. Born in Germany in 1877, naturalized Swiss in 1924. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946. In the 1960s, there was a surge of interest in reading Hesse in the United States. He is hailed as the last knight of German Romanticism.
