Nankichi Niimi is a genius writer in the world of children's literature, one of Japan's three great fairy tale masters, hailed as "Japan's Andersen." He is also commemorated by the "Nankichi Niimi Children's Literature Award," the "Nankichi Niimi Fairy Tale Award," and the "Nankichi Niimi Memorial Museum," praised as "Miyazawa Kenji in the north, Nankichi Niimi in the south." He is on par with famous children's literature writers such as Ogawa Mimei, Miyazawa Kenji, and Tsubota Jōji. Many of his works have been selected for Japanese elementary school language textbooks, Chinese elementary school language textbooks, and are required reading for the new curriculum standards. His works are full of longing for beauty and innocence, and an appreciation for the truth, goodness, and beauty in the world. This book includes classic stories such as "The Snail's Sorrow."
Content Introduction
A collection of stories that can accompany children's growth and shape their character.
A bridge book that allows all children to gain beauty and emotion from it.
The book collects five excellent works by the famous Japanese fairy tale master Nankichi Niimi.
The five fairy tales included in "The Little God Who Loves Children" are both joyful and sad.
"The Little God Who Loves Children," one of Nankichi Niimi's few joyful works.
"A Bundle of Flames," passing on love and goodness.
"The Little Fox Buys Things," perfectly aligned with a child's nature.
"Shadow" and "The Snail's Sorrow," tell touching views on life.
The shadow in "Shadow" that kept racing with the crow is actually one's own shadow, referred to as an allegorical fairy tale.
The theme of "The Snail's Sorrow" is the realization that "everyone must live with sorrow." Here, Nankichi Niimi expresses his view on life—losing his mother at the age of four, living a hard life as a stepson in another family for a period after leaving his parents' home, Nankichi Niimi's view on life, having long known the vicissitudes of life.
Is such a theme suitable for children's fairy tales, and can it reach children's hearts?
At the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) World Congress, Empress Michiko recalled, "Later, at unexpected times, this story repeatedly came to my mind." The sorrow and unease of the snail "may have been etched in my memory." She described how her tender heart was deeply moved by this story.
