Thomas the Dark is Blanchot's first "fictional work." Both its English and German translators have acknowledged the difficulty of translating and even reading it. Foucault once noted that one of the hallmarks of Blanchot's work is its "disappearance from the reign of representation," a sentiment perfectly suited to the reading experience of Thomas the Dark: a love story without past or future, without motivation or reason, so shallow that it defies clear imagery. Yet, these imageless images, like a nightmare, remain unforgettable.
An unsettling work. Harold Bloom's inclusion of this book in the appendix of his book The Western Canon as a recommended reading for troubled times is surprisingly appropriate. In his famous lectures, the master of psychoanalysis, Lacan, praised Dark Thomas as a "realization of fantasy." For Chinese readers, the publication of a Chinese edition of Dark Thomas will undoubtedly fill a missing link in French thought.
