About Book

Daybreak

The picture book "Dawn" is a reimagining of Liu Zongyuan's poem "The Old Fisherman" (The old fisherman slept by the west cliff at night, at dawn he drew water from the clear Xiang and burned Chu bamboo. The smoke cleared, the sun rose, no one was in sight, but a creaking sound painted the mountains and rivers green. Looking back, he sailed downstream from the horizon, the clouds on the cliff followed without a care.) by Japanese national treasure artist Hiroshi Abe. As they journeyed down the river, the grandfather told his grandson several fantastical short stories, illustrating the symbiotic relationship between hunters and animals, and showcasing the spectacular and beautiful scenery along the way in the Siberian region. Liu Zongyuan's "The Old Fisherman" was previously adapted into the picture book "Dawn" by German illustrator Jörg Müller (a four-time Caldecott Medal winner) as a representative work. Mr. Hiroshi Abe's "Dawn," however, offers us a new visual impact and inner experience in terms of its core story and color palette.
Following the grandfather's narration, we experienced an immersive and fantastical Siberian drift, getting to know nature and recognizing the brilliance of human nature. Here, nature is grand, gentle, tranquil, and full of wildness.
