About Book

In the 1980s, the question of Hong Kong's future loomed large on the political agenda, stirring public unrest. The 1980s also marked a period of conflicting ideologies within Hong Kong society, with diverse voices debating the future of Hong Kong. The 1980s marked a crucial period in the development of Hong Kong's democratic system, with the British Hong Kong government promoting representative political reforms and the Chinese government drafting the Basic Law.
Hong Kong's democratic movement has lasted for at least two decades, a bumpy road that hasn't been particularly successful. However, the half-baked democracy we have today is the product of considerable effort on the part of many individuals and groups involved. However, there are few comprehensive records of the work of many civil society groups and individuals, the spirit of the participants, and the interactions between different political forces.
This book contains interviews with ten participants in the 1980s democracy movement; the interviewees include Li Zhiyue, Fung Kin-kee, Law Wing-sang, Yip Kin-yuen, Wong Pik-wan, Leung Lai-ching, Lee Chu-ming, Szeto Wah, Chu Yiu-ming and Ha Ke-lung, all of whom played different roles in promoting democracy in Hong Kong. Through their oral accounts, the book reconstructs the development of the democracy movement in the 1980s, reveals the different aspects of society and politics at that time, and reflects the different views of the democrats and the process of Hong Kong's democratic progress.
Today's politics bears remnants of the politics of the 1980s. A historical perspective offers a different perspective on today's political realities. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the development of Hong Kong's democracy movement.
