This book is Joyce's first novel using the stream-of-consciousness technique, and it is one of the earliest and most successful stream-of-consciousness novels in world literature. Strongly autobiographical, it describes how a young Dublin boy named Stephen escapes the oppression and bullying of boarding school and, on this pitiful, god-forsaken island, indulges in beauty and imagination, seeking and discovering a way of life or art in which the human spirit can express itself freely and unhindered. He emerges from his cocoon and becomes the young artist Stephen. His agonizing journey, attempting to break free from the various influences that hinder his development—family constraints, religious traditions, and narrow-minded nationalism—in pursuit of the true meaning of art and beauty, is a portrait of the young Joyce's life and creative career, from awakening to maturity. Joyce's subsequent masterpieces, Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, can be seen as sequels to A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
