About Book

"Neon Darkness" is a neon sign research project by the Information Design Lab of the Polytechnic University's School of Design. Beginning in August 2015, the research team walked from Tsim Sha Tsui to Prince Edward, passing through Jordan, Yau Ma Tei, and Mong Kok, covering 15 major roads and over 40 streets. The team also visited Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Tsuen Wan, Kwai Tsing, Sham Shui Po, and Sai Kung, documenting over 500 neon signs. The team photographed neon signs that had not yet been removed, allowing viewers to explore the visual culture and local aesthetics of various industries through the neon sign images, thereby understanding how signs construct Hong Kong's street imagery and consumer culture. In summary, the book will focus on analyzing the visual aesthetics of existing neon signs and the consumer culture in Hong Kong that they have shaped. It will also highlight the changing consumption patterns in each district and explore how neon signs enrich our city's street space and extend our collective memory.
