About Book

Lu Yanshi was born into a wealthy Shanghai family, a gifted and suave young master. He was intelligent, suave, multilingual, and charming with women. After his father's death, his childless young stepmother, Feng Yifang, used both persuasion and force to convince him to marry her niece, Feng Wanyu, to consolidate his position within the family. Loveless, Lu Yanshi soon left for overseas study, living a carefree, playboy lifestyle for several years in Washington, D.C. Upon his return, Dr. Lu Yanshi embarked on a successful and glamorous life as a university professor, but also on an awkward family life caught between his amorous and shrewd stepmother and his gentle but resilient wife.
In the 1950s, Lu Yanshi, due to his background and his unworldly and volatile nature, was labeled a "counter-revolutionary." His pedantic and ridiculous bookish demeanor led to his sentence being repeatedly extended during successive campaigns, ultimately resulting in a life sentence. This highly intelligent, American-educated doctor, armed with profound knowledge, spent twenty years in the desolate grasslands of Northwest China. Spiritual deprivation, political harshness, and the infighting and oppression among the prisoners ultimately shattered the noble pride of a bygone era scholar. Ruminating on his prosperous half-life in the midst of desolation, he reaffirmed his deep love for Wanyu. Wanyu, once the beginning of his blandness, became, in his memories, his perfect destination.
After the Cultural Revolution, Lu Yanshi and Feng Wanyu, who had missed each other so much, were finally reunited. However, when Lu Yanshi returned to his home in Shanghai, he found that time and politics had completely changed his life. He could no longer find his place: his son, who had been decadent all his life and eventually became a mediocre petty citizen, had always rejected and used him; his youngest daughter, who was both talented and beautiful and eventually became an older left-over woman, had mixed feelings about him and her attitude changed several times; Wanyu, the only one who had been waiting for his return, suddenly lost her memory before he got home.
