"Getting Lost" is Annie Ernaux's diary of a secret affair with a young married man (a staff member of the Soviet Embassy in France) over a year and a half. Her masterpiece "A Simple Passion" was adapted from this affair, but in this book, her words are direct, raw, and unfiltered.
The diary covers the period from 1989 to 1990. At that time, Annie was divorced, had two adult sons, lived alone in the suburbs of Paris, and was approaching fifty. Her lover visited her irregularly. She had no desire to write, waiting for his calls. She only lived to feel desire and for their next meeting. When he left and the desire faded, she felt a step closer to death.
Ernaux's work is known for its conciseness. In "Getting Lost," she abandons all affectation, reducing her words to their most naked and vulnerable, documenting a woman caught in love, desire, and despair.
