The texture of hard times: an observational memoir of life in the UK

Wang Bang's first nonfiction documentary. She lived in the UK for twelve years, living in public housing, browsing secondhand shops, growing vegetables in her backyard, working in the fields, visiting rural social clubs, penetrating the Labour Party, and interviewing ordinary people in a foreign land. Using "British observations" as a starting point, drawing on her own real-life circumstances and experiences, she discusses a range of social realities, including poverty and institutions, family and elderly care, rural and urban areas, Brexit and Remain, culture and history. Her life is the source of her thought and the starting point of her writing. Unlike the "tourist" observation and documentation of typical travel literature, she has long been rooted in the local area, observing the people and objects of daily life—food, clothing, housing, markets, neighbors—as a "living person." This continuously broadens her perspective, encompassing a range of social issues, including family, elderly care, healthcare, and institutions. She reflects on the impact of globalization and reveals the complex truths behind global monopoly capitalism. Her long-term experience in media and her writing training imbue her narrative with both a unique perspective and a powerful appeal.
