About Book
About Book
"Reading and the Ups and Downs of Self-Pleasure" was the title Ma Yan proposed for her first collection of essays before her death. Her introduction to the book described it as a collection of essays on reading and life, focusing primarily on ancient poetry and world literature, with a particular focus on creative writing techniques in the sense of style and pragmatics, the transmission of aesthetic reading experiences, and the inheritance of traditional Chinese culture. Approximately thirty essays, each under 5,000 words, mutually support each other, constructing a rich reading life scenario that reflects her personal aesthetic tendencies and intellectual characteristics. Through the author's unique intellectual background and theoretical framework, she shares with readers a new perspective and possibility on reading.
The new edition, while restoring the title, also restores all of Ma Yan's selected essays and their order, potentially allowing a new generation of readers to discern the true nature of Ma Yan's life before her accident. This constitutes the first volume of the book. The remaining essays from the previous edition form the second volume, categorized as "Extraneous," and are arranged chronologically. The third volume continues to contain the diary selections from the previous edition.
"Ten years, though short, seems long enough for both the dead and the living to shed their mournful expressions and for a true life to be reborn from the ashes, as long as her poems and writings continue to resonate in the hearts of countless unknown readers."
