"On Weariness" compiles five distinctive narrative works written by Handke from the late 1980s to 2013: "On Weariness," "On the Jukebox," "On the Day of Success," "On a Quiet Place," and "On the Mushroom Maniac." These five "novels" deconstruct traditional narrative forms, going further than any of Handke's previous works, practically inventing a new genre. They are interior monologues and journeys of the soul. Regardless of the shifting narrative forms, Handke remains focused on the relationship between self and world. The tiredness in "On Weariness" is an important way of perceiving the world; "On the Jukebox" recalls and calls back the past time; the "quiet place" mentioned in "On a Quiet Place" is actually a toilet, and the author's unique expression style completely surpasses what people are accustomed to and self-evident; "On the Mushroom Maniac" creates a fictional character who is obsessed with mushrooms. From curiosity, pursuit, obsession, madness, to gradual calmness, withdrawal, and liberation, Handke uses this to review and reflect on his life.
