This book aims to give a history of the relationship between the modern soul and a new judicial power, a genealogy of the current scientific-legal synthesis in which the power to punish acquires its foundations, its justifications, its rules, amplifies its effects, and uses this synthesis to mask its own extraordinary singularity.
Foucault called it "my first book," and historian Peter Gay described Discipline and Punish as a key text for Foucault, arguing that it influenced the scholarly study of prison theory and practice in the 19th century.
