Sinophone / Xenophone: Contemporary Sinophone Literature Reader
Sinophone literature is a rising topic in international Sinology, having recently generated significant buzz in Taiwan and other Chinese-speaking societies. Sinophone literature emphasizes the study of the spoken and written languages of China and the Chinese diaspora—primarily Chinese, but also its various offshoots—as a framework for research. This approach re-examines the phenomena of fluidity, dialogue, and resistance in contemporary literature. Far from the myth of a single, centrally regulated rhyme, Sinophone literature is now experiencing a multitude of "Hua" voices."Chinese and Foreign Styles: A Reader in Chinese Literature" is divided into four parts, representing the trends in Chinese literature in recent years. The first part, "Place and Scenery," presents the fundamental concerns of Chinese literature: a keen perception of geographical space, local customs, and local customs. The second part, "Sound and Image," touches on the mediation process of local customs and people's appearance. From the diverse sounds of the north and south (dialects, accents, foreign languages...) to the ever-changing physical images (text, maps, shapes...). The third part, "Roots and Paths," explores the dynamic routes of where the subjects of Chinese literature come from and where they go. Whether in dispersion or in the homeland, whether flowers and fruits are scattered or spiritual roots are planted, writing and reading Chinese literature always reminds us of the politics of identity and recognition. The fourth volume, "History and Trends," emphasizes the various ways Chinese-language literature inscribes and even participates in history, ranging from subverting national narratives to excavating personal memories. Confronted with the determinism of history, the writer considers and presents a poetic politics grounded in "trends"—inner momentum and external situations.
The 33 works selected in this book come from Taiwan, Hong Kong, mainland China, North America, Southeast Asia, Asia, Europe, and Africa. They also represent or write about different ethnic groups, regional cultures, politics, and national positions, presenting the diverse facets of Chinese-language literature.
