About Book

【Editor's Recommendation】
★Huang Jinxing, Vice President of the Academia Sinica and former Director of the Institute of History and Philology, wrote the preface and recommendation. As a senior media person, Zhang Quan respects history, is fair in his arguments, and is good at conveying distant history to the public in an easy-to-understand way.
"Masters in the Wilderness" collects a large amount of first-hand archival materials and reads a wide range of memoirs, papers and monographs. It deeply explores the spirit, thoughts and life of scholars, outlines the group portrait of scholars, and explores the ups and downs of the academic community, allowing us to look back more clearly on the path taken by a generation of masters.
——Huang Jinxing, Vice President of the Academia Sinica and former Director of the Institute of History and Philology ★ The Chinese version of "When the Stars Shine"
Discover and revisit the spirit, thoughts and life of a generation of masters represented by Chen Yinke, Ding Wenjiang, Li Ji, Zhao Yuanren, Fu Sinian, Jia Lanpo, Liang Sicheng, Lin Huiyin, Liang Siyong, etc.
It tells the story of how they left their studies in troubled times, entered a new era, cut through thorns and brambles, carried axes into the mountains, forged new paths in the wilderness, explored and reconstructed ancient Chinese history with scientific methods, and thus changed the world's understanding of China.
A genius that appears once in a lifetime, an unprecedented generation, because of them, an era of great discovery emerged on Chinese soil.
★Respecting history, being fair in argument, and explaining things in simple terms, this is a painstaking work by Zhang Quan, a well-known writer, former editor-in-chief of "Life", and three-time winner of the "Asia Excellence in Journalism Award". It took him ten years to create this work.
【Content Introduction】
"Masters in the Wilderness" tells the story of the early days of Chinese archaeology in the 1920s. The author charts the birth of Chinese archaeology through the development of four major institutions: the Geological Survey, the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Studies, the Institute of History and Philology of the Academia Sinica, and the Architectural Society. These four institutions produced numerous renowned archaeologists (Li Ji, Zhao Yuanren, Wu Mi, Jia Lanpo, Xia Nai, Liang Sicheng, Lin Huiyin, Liang Siyong, and many others). With delicate and sensitive prose, the author recounts their work and contributions, both at the archaeological site and in their academic studies. He highlights their courage and perseverance in forging new frontiers amidst adversity, and depicts their dedication and professionalism in serving their country amidst internal and external challenges. "Masters in the Wilderness" also depicts the many significant discoveries of the period, which established China's voice on the global archaeological stage.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Chinese archaeology, "Masters in the Wilderness" aims to review the spirit and virtues of the pioneers, hoping that people today can recreate the "golden age" of Chinese archaeology.
