In the spring of 1975, in Istanbul, 30-year-old Kemal, a wealthy young man, was engaged to the socialite Sibel, but unexpectedly met the innocent 18-year-old Fusun, a distant cousin from a poor family. After a passionate love affair, Kemal finally broke off his engagement with Sibel, only to discover that Fusun had already left him.
Kemal followed the girl's shadow and ghost, deep into another Istanbul, wandering through the impoverished backstreets and lingering in open-air cinemas. On streets ravaged by nationalist bombs, by the strait lit by the fires of a collided oil tanker, and under curfew following a military coup, he tried to get closer to Fusun until the unbearable longing completely derailed his life.
In order to soothe the pain of love, he carefully collected everything about his beloved, everything she had loved, even everything she had touched, and treasured them in his own "Museum of Innocence"...

2. The museum will indeed exist. Many years ago, Pamuk purchased a property in Istanbul located at 24 Dargachi Çıkmazı Street in Çukurjum, the home of Füsun's family as described in the book. This property will be named after the book and transformed into a museum showcasing Istanbul's culture and urban life. The Museum of Innocence plans to begin accepting visitors in 2010, with a free admission ticket included with the book.
