About Book
·【Ten Years of Detailed Research】Ten years of research earned the title of "Dream of the Red Chamber Nightmare". See in detail how Eileen Chang carefully read "Dream of the Red Chamber"?
[A Thorough Reading of the Dream of the Red Chamber] During those years, I happened to have the opportunity to borrow books from the Harvard-Yenching Library and the UC Berkeley Library, where I read the Zhiben edition of "Dream of the Red Chamber." Modern scholars often read while standing—there's no time to sit down. As for my own research, my only qualification is a thorough understanding of "Dream of the Red Chamber." I don't need to pay close attention to different editions; even the most unfamiliar words will naturally come to mind. — Zhang Ailing [The Source of Everything] These two books are the source of everything for me, especially "Dream of the Red Chamber." — Zhang Ailing [Three Regrets in Life] Someone once said the "three greatest regrets" are "the first is that shad has too many bones, the second is that crabapples lack fragrance." I can't remember the third, perhaps because I subconsciously think it should be "the third is that "Dream of the Red Chamber" is unfinished." — Zhang Ailing [Soul Comfort] It's like a maze, a puzzle, and a detective novel. The different endings in the early editions have the charm of "Rashomon." No matter how much trouble I encounter, no matter how big or small, I just need to "deepen" "Dream of the Red Chamber." — Zhang Ailing, [Unattainable] Zhang Ailing is the only one who can truly be called Cao Xueqin's confidant. I now deeply admire her and consider her a remarkable figure in the history of Redology, unmatched by ordinary scholars. Zhang Ailing's prodigious talent, her meticulous attention to detail and her exceptional memory are beyond reach. I feel ashamed to be a "Redology scholar"!
Zhou Ruchang's "Dream of the Red Chamber Nightmare" is Zhang Ailing's study of the Dream of the Red Chamber. She spent ten years researching the novel, writing textual research articles that were later compiled into this book. "Dream of the Red Chamber Nightmare" includes several essays, including "Preface," "Unfinished Dream of the Red Chamber," "A Dream of the Red Chamber Interlude (I)," "A First Detailed Account of the Dream of the Red Chamber," "A Second Detailed Account of the Dream of the Red Chamber," and "A Third Detailed Account of the Dream of the Red Chamber." These essays offer a detailed and insightful exploration of the novel.
