This is a regional novel, where the characters' journeys can be mapped to a "tangible" map. It is also a novel of memory, with the faded dreams of a 1960s boyhood broadly radiating, everywhere the vibrant memories of everyday life, and the hedonism of the 1990s, a continuous stream of banquets. The narrative frequently alternates between these two timeframes, with legends constantly emerging, extending the "inconsistency" and intricate complexity of Shanghai. Careful satire, aggressive caricature, and hidden within are Shanghai's fashion and trends; omissions of yesterday, or revelations of tomorrow... Even when the flowers wither, death arrives, the song ends, the people still linger.
