Czesław Milosz, born in 1911 in Sietajnie, was a Polish poet, translator, and essayist. A former dissident, he lived in France and then settled in the United States. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1980. In the 1990s, he returned to Poland and settled there. He died in Kraków in 2004 and is buried in Wawel Cathedral, Poland's national cathedral.
Joseph Brodsky, born in Leningrad in 1940, was exiled in 1964 on charges of "social parasitism." He was deported in 1972 and settled in the United States with the help of the poet W.H. Auden and other supporters. He won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1987. He died in the United States in 1996 and was buried in Venice, never returning to his homeland.
