The Ausgewanderten
Introduction: Immigrants are souls who have lost their Sundays, searching for a better definition of life on earth, only to return home in death. This book, Sebald's defining work, comprises four exceptionally long short stories. The first, "Dr. Henry Selwyn," tells the story of Dr. Selwyn, who left his Lithuanian countryside with his family at the age of seven, intending to go to America but instead ending up in England, where he lived in poverty in his later years. The second, "Paul Bereyette," explores the life of a beloved elementary school teacher, who, due to family tragedy, succumbs to the melancholy of an exile and complex feelings towards Germany. The third, "Ambrose Adelwald," recounts the legendary yet tragic life of a great-uncle who immigrated to New York. He worked hard to become a butler for a wealthy banker, but ultimately ended up in a sanatorium and underwent shock therapy. The fourth, "Max Felber," recounts the life of the painter Felber and the memoirs of Felber's mother. These diverse stories share a common thread: they all address the tragic experiences of displaced Jews, both in their native lands and in foreign lands.☀The media recommends that most writers, even the good ones, write about things that can be written; while the very great ones, such as Sebald, write about things that cannot be written.
—The New York Times
It’s probably too early to predict the extent to which Sebald’s hybrid works will influence the novel genre, but it’s no exaggeration to say that he was the first person since Borges to radically erase and redraw the boundaries of the novel.
—The New Yorker
The first thing to note about Sebald's works is that they always have the air of being published posthumously. As critics often say, he writes like a ghost. He is the most creative writer of the late 20th century.
—Geoff Dyer, famous British writer
