The novel depicts Nastasya, a stunningly beautiful woman of noble birth in the 1860s, who is constantly abused by the landowner Totsky, who later offers her a large sum of money in marriage to the despicable Ganya. At the heroine's birthday party, the young Prince Myshkin, considered an idiot, suddenly appears and offers to marry Nastasya without any conditions, deeply moving her. On the day of her wedding, Nastasya, despite her deep love for him, runs away with the playboy Rogozhin, who ultimately murders her.
