"The War" is Marguerite Duras's semi-autobiographical novel, written in the 1940s and discovered over 40 years later in her country house. The story recounts Duras's husband, Robert L., being arrested for participating in the resistance movement and imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp. From then on, Duras began a long and desperate wait.
This was a torture of "uncertainty," as she waited by the phone, at the train station for returning prisoners of war, experiencing repeated mental breakdowns amidst hope and despair.
However, the most shocking part is not just the soul-devouring wait. When Robert miraculously returned alive, Duras, seeing him emaciated and almost inhuman, recorded even more complex feelings – besides joy, there was fear and a sense of strangeness in the face of her returning lover after extreme torment, as well as an irreparable alienation.
