About Book

L'Histoire de l'art depuis Walter Benjamin

How can we reflect on the meaning of history, art, and art history from the perspective of Walter Benjamin's thought? Literary scholars, photographers, and film historians have long been adept at applying Benjamin's theories on the narrative and technical reproduction of images. But we cannot claim that art historians engage in the same practice.
This book is compiled based on the proceedings of the international academic symposium "Art History after Walter Benjamin," held on December 5 and 6, 2008, by the Center for History and Art Theory of the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales and the National Institute for Art History. Giovanni Caneri and Giorgio Didi-Hubermann have selected eight essays from these symposiums, each offering a diverse perspective, to form this collection of art historical research. These essays resituate the research and thinking methods initiated by Benjamin's "Arcades Project" within the context of art history.
As Benjamin pointed out in "On the Concept of History": "Go upstream and revitalize the outline of history." He is like a signpost or a lighthouse, guiding us to shuttle and wander in the field of art.
2022 marks the 130th anniversary of Benjamin's birth. The translation and publication of this book is also a commemoration of this melancholic "Prince of Saturn".
