Thirty years after its publication, the author made minor revisions and omissions in response to reader feedback regarding the use of Latin citations and an overly broad background. "The Name of the Rose" takes place in a medieval monastery. Monk William and his disciple Adso arrive to facilitate a mediation between the Emperor and the Pope. Upon their arrival, a murder occurs. William, a skilled deacon, is commissioned by the abbot to investigate, but the murders continue unabated, with one person dying every day. The monastery's labyrinthine library holds many secrets. As the secrets are uncovered, the truth behind the murders is revealed. Ultimately, the monastery is destroyed in a fire.
