The Name of the Rose, Umberto Eco's masterpiece, is hailed as the forefather of the "cryptographic mystery novel." In Japan, a nation renowned for mystery literature, it even received the top overall rating in the "This Mystery Novel is Amazing" award, which has been established for 20 years. Thirty years after its publication, the author made minor revisions and omissions in response to reader feedback regarding the use of Latin citations and an overly broad background. To enrich the reading experience, this revised edition will also include a note titled "Notes on the Name of the Rose."
"The Name of the Rose" takes place in a medieval monastery. Monk William and his disciple Adso arrive to facilitate a mediation between the Emperor and the Pope. Upon their arrival, a murder occurs. William, a skilled deacon, is commissioned by the abbot to investigate, but the murders continue unabated, with one person dying every day. The monastery's labyrinthine library holds many secrets. As the secrets are uncovered, the truth behind the murders is revealed. Ultimately, the monastery is destroyed in a fire.
