About Book

One of Tang Xianzu's "Four Dreams of Linchuan," this classic Ming dynasty play tells the story of Du Liniang, who, while visiting a garden, experiences a startling dream in which she falls in love with the scholar Liu Mengmei at first sight. Upon waking, she searches for the dream, unable to find it, and subsequently dies of illness, only to be resurrected. Upon its release, the play became so widely circulated that it practically drove down the price of The West Chamber. Qing Dynasty scholar Wu Wushan's fiancée Chen Tong, his wife Tan Ze, and his subsequent wife Qian Yi all shared a special fondness for The Peony Pavilion, leaving behind a legacy of critical acclaim. Wu Shanren's "Three Women" offers a meticulous and nuanced appreciation and commentary from a female perspective, offering insightful interpretations of the text, appreciation of fine composition, explanations of philosophical principles, and expressions of emotion, vividly capturing the lifestyles of women of the upper classes at the time. This work is based on the Kangxi edition of "The Peony Pavilion" by "Three Women," with collation using the Qingfen Pavilion edition.
