About Book
About Book
"Neighbors of Yandong Garden" is a masterful nonfiction work by Professor Xu Hong of the School of Journalism and Communication at Peking University. It allows the 22 small buildings in Yandong Garden, designated as "Historic Buildings," to speak, telling the stories of their residents from 1926 to 1966. Using a feature-length narrative, meticulously researching historical materials, and interviewing dozens of second-generation Yandong Garden residents, the author salvages memories of the site and a history that has been buried—a tribute to and a memory of that generation of scholars: born in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republican period, they studied abroad, resolutely returned in times of national crisis, dedicated themselves to serving their country with science and culture, and, despite all manner of hardships, remained steadfast in their hearts. Xu Hong's father, Xu Xianyu, was the former head of the Department of Mathematics at Yenching University. Born at No. 59 Yannanyuan, Yenching University, Xu Hong moved to No. 40 Yandongyuan in the late autumn of 1946, when she was one hundred days old, and has lived there ever since, remaining the only family to do so. She went deep into every family and recorded the touching love between husband and wife, father and son, father and daughter, as well as the love between colleagues and teachers and students between neighbors, recreating the spiritual world of scholars of that era and their daily life in the study.
