After Japan's defeat in the war, the literary value of Dazai Osamu's works shone brightly.
This book collects all 20 works Dazai Osamu wrote during his evacuation in Tsugaru. These include: Pandora's Box, Faint Light, The Garden, The Words "Parents," Lies, Currency, So Long, Fifteen Years, To a Friend Who Has Not Returned, The Bitter Almanac, Opportunity, Sparrow, Looking for People, Equal Rights for Men and Women, Friendships, Ding-Dong, Merry Christmas, Villon's Wife, Winter Fireworks, and Spring Withered Leaves.
Among them, "Pandora's Box" is a famous piece, and also an epistolary novel.
A young man, "Hibari," suffering from tuberculosis and recovering at a mountain sanatorium, is terrified by the approaching death on one hand, and on the other, fights against his illness with the companionship of distinct personalities and diverse backgrounds, striving to become a "new man." There, the bittersweet emotions with the two vibrant nurses—Sister Take and A-Zheng—and the sudden grief caused by a friend's death due to illness, all stir his emotions. He meticulously records these daily emotional fluctuations in letters to his close friend. However, "Hibari" consistently maintains a positive worldview, akin to Greek mythology—in a corner of Pandora's Box, which spread misfortune to the world, he discovers a small gem inscribed with "hope."
"Pandora's Box" represents the optimistic side of Dazai Osamu's writing.
