Professor Lu Chensheng of Harvard University saw a news report: a beekeeper lost 2 billion bees in one year, with no bodies found, only empty beehives. This phenomenon later became known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
This ecological catastrophe piqued Professor Lu Chensheng's curiosity. He, along with Kenneth Warrell, who has over 60 years of beekeeping expertise, and insect toxicologist Richard Callahan, began to research this phenomenon.
Their research found that continuous intake of low doses of neonicotinoid pesticides affects the mitochondrial health of bees, leading to CCD. The publication of these results led to several changes in pesticide laws in the EU and the United States.
In 2018, Professor Lu Chensheng returned to China to teach and conducted several pesticide detection experiments. Traces of neonicotinoid pesticides were detected in water sources, soil, common fruits and vegetables, and even in the blood of pregnant women.
The relationship between ecology and human health is close. Professor Lu Chensheng hopes that through the disappearance of bees, humanity will be reminded to better balance the pros and cons of pesticide use.
