Hemingway maintained the habit of standing up to write from the very beginning. He recorded his daily progress on a large sheet, with word counts varying from 450 to 575, 462 to 1,250, then back down to 512. He rewrote the ending of A Farewell to Arms thirty-nine times before he was satisfied.
