About Book

Heidegger: an introduction

This is a well-known introductory work on Heidegger in the English-speaking world. Its Chinese translation was produced by an assembly line worker working 12-hour shifts every day. This event is profoundly significant: in a world dominated by technology, Chen Zhi demonstrates the enduring existence of freedom of choice; thinking is resistance, and Heidegger constantly asks us to think about how to think. Recommended by Chen Jiaying, Sun Zhouxing, and Wang Jun.
In November 2021, the Tencent News Guyu Lab WeChat official account published an article titled "It's perfectly normal for a migrant worker to think about Heidegger," which brought widespread attention to Chen Zhi, then a migrant worker. Now, his translation of Richard Poulter's "Introduction to Heidegger" has finally been published.
In his new book, Freedom: An Incurable Disease, Zizek mentions Chen Zhi's translation of Heidegger's Introduction and writes: "We should celebrate miracles like Chen Zhi—they prove that philosophy is more than just a discipline, that philosophy can suddenly interrupt the course of our daily lives and leave us bewildered. ... Today, we should say: Let a hundred Chen Zhis study philosophy—only in this way can we find a way out of our unfortunate predicament."
Richard Bolt's "Introduction to Heidegger" is considered a classic work on Heidegger studies in the English-speaking world. Mr. Bolt wrote a preface for the Chinese translation, added content, and updated references based on the latest discoveries in Heidegger studies.
The translation of this book refers to various previous translations of Heidegger's works in the Chinese world, and provides detailed explanations through a large number of annotations, making it easier for ordinary readers to understand the various concepts of Heidegger's philosophy more deeply.
————
Numerous works of varying lengths have been published on Heidegger's philosophy, but this one remains highly recommended. Firstly, Heidegger's philosophy is both important and challenging, and different interpreters offer different approaches to his thought. Secondly, this short book confronts the profound nature of philosophical questions while minimizing the use of technical terminology to clarify their context. It contributes significantly to Being and Time and offers a more selective exposition of Heidegger's later thought. Overall, the author does not offer a comprehensive introduction to Heidegger's major themes, but rather guides the reader into his problematic consciousness. The translator of this book is also very conscientious, repeatedly revising the translation and including numerous translator's notes to aid the reader's understanding.
— Chen Jiaying [Professor at Capital Normal University and Zhejiang University City College]
Chen Zhi was a migrant worker when he translated this book, "Introduction to Heidegger," and his discovery sparked a heated online discussion. His situation has improved, but the question remains: Chinese farmers and the philosopher Heidegger. Suffice it to say: Heidegger himself was a farmer from Germany's Black Forest, a true farmer, yet he lived a relatively comfortable life, parasitizing the university and academic system.
—Sun Zhouxing [Professor of the School of Philosophy, Zhejiang University]
As a classic work on Heidegger in the English-speaking world, Richard Poulter's Introduction to Heidegger undoubtedly deserves a Chinese translation. Making its publication at this moment all the more significant is its translator, Chen Zhi. In 2021, he became an online sensation as the "migrant worker translating Heidegger," even garnering attention and praise from Žižek. The translation itself is generally rigorous and reliable, and even more commendable is that Poulter has expanded the Chinese version. This translation is a unique event of our time, both academically and socially, granting "philosophy" a broader scope for imagination.
