About Book

A practitioner of liberalism and a role model of transformational justice,

The resolute figure who pursues democratic constitutionalism,

The character and courage to fight against authoritarian systems,

It wrote a magnificent page in Taiwan's post-war political history.

As an intellectual, Lei Zhen is able to transcend time and space and guide Taiwan. He can be said to be a "big picture thinker." - President Tsai Ing-wen

This book follows Lei Chen's life chronologically, beginning with his family background, his educational upbringing, his studies in Japan, his return to China, his government service, and his subsequent political career. He participated in inter-party negotiations, constitution-making, and constitution-implementation. Following the defeat of the Republic of China (ROC) government in 1949, he fled to Taiwan, where he published the book "Free China" and became a leading figure in Taiwan's liberal democratic discourse and movement in the 1950s. Ultimately, his criticism of the Kuomintang (KMT) regime led by Chiang Kai-shek led to his imprisonment on trumped-up charges in September 1960, where he endured a decade of devastating imprisonment. In the early 1970s, Lei Chen, emphasizing the primacy of freedom and democracy, explored possible paths for the development of constitutional democracy in Taiwan, a position whose arguments remain relevant today.

This biography summarizes Lei Chen's eventful life, presenting his role and status in Taiwan's democratic movement, as well as his perseverance and courage in moving toward a democratic constitutional state. His spirit of persistent pursuit and unremitting struggle is admirable and has left a fine example for future generations.
