About Book
About Book
*The Hour of the Star* is a novel that explores the theme of "identity." The author portrays the arduous life of Macabéa, a girl who moved from an impoverished region to Rio de Janeiro. She sees the narrator's reflection in the mirror, and the narrator, appearing in the first person, speaks of their shared loneliness. After breaking up with her boyfriend, she looks into the mirror and applies lipstick, as if she has found her dream identity: to become a dazzling superstar. After receiving an auspicious prediction from a tarot card reader, a scene both ironic and tragic unfolds: she is run over by a luxurious Mercedes driven by a blond man. As she lies dying, the "hour of the star" finally appears in her hallucinations, and all her humbleness sublimates into brilliance. Clarice Lispector (1922-1977), one of Brazil's classic contemporary writers, is hailed as the most important Jewish writer since Kafka and one of the truly unique authors in Latin American literature.
