This book, developed from four lectures by Levinas, serves as a transition between his two major works from his early and middle periods, From Being to Existents and Totality and Infinity. In this book, Levinas further elaborates on the generation of time in relation to others, the idea that temporality is social relations itself, already evident in From Being to Existents. While Levinas's ideas are profound and his language difficult, this book is very systematic in structure and its logical progression is very clear. Compared to his other works, this is one of the best choices for beginners.
