About Book
About Book
📷Traveled across 28 provinces, spent over 1,000 days, and pressed the shutter 200,000 times. The veteran documentary photographer deeply captured the interweaving of tradition and modernity in China from 1978 to 1985. 🎥Editor's recommendation: An unprecedented and determined journey.
28 provinces, more than 1,000 days and nights, 200,000 shutter clicks,
From forests to hills, from deserts to plateaus, from farmlands to roads, from dining tables to squares,
Beyond the reach and sight of ordinary people,
The distant, the nearby, the unfamiliar, the intimate, all resonate with me.
A critical period of change,
The primitive joy of the mountains and fields is mixed with the rolling wheels of urbanization.
The old model has not yet died out, and new expressions are emerging.
A keen historical perspective unearths a picture full of hope.
It exudes natural vitality like early spring.
The country has a concrete face and the noun has real footnotes.
Open this thick collection of images of modern Chinese life,
We can see our ancestors, our parents, and ourselves.
Hiroji Kubota, a veteran documentary photographer and the first Asian member of Magnum Photos
The important photography special "China" that shocked the world in the 1980s,
Inspiring a generation of young photographers to observe society through documentary-style creations.
More than 200 color photos vividly present the rich details of an era.
📷Introduction
Between 1978 and 1985, Japanese photographer Hiroji Kubota spent over 1,000 days traveling nearly every province in China, taking over 200,000 color photographs. His keen political vision saw China at a historical turning point. He visited China, lived in communes with ordinary people, used dry toilets, and rode oxcarts. He discreetly observed every aspect of China, documenting its clothing, diet, work, travel, and recreation. He captured both profound traditional elements and new forms of expression. Based on the hardcover edition of "China in Early Spring," this book selects over 200 of the most iconic images, presented in a more accessible format and binding, to present a China blossoming like the early spring.
