About Book

The Silent Traveller in Japan

In the 1960s, Jiang Yi, who had lived in Britain and the United States for decades, traveled to Japan with his homesickness.
Putting aside all preconceived notions about this land, he has traveled far beyond the reach of most Japanese people.
Go to Tokyo to see the bustling performance of an international metropolis;
Go to the ancient capital of Nara to search for a thousand-year-old double-cherry blossom;
Waiting for the smile of Mount Fuji after the clouds and mist have cleared by the shore of Lake Kawaguchi;
Visit the legendary tomb of Jesus in the wind and rain of Towada.
Wherever you go,
The graceful and elegant Ise Kagura is easily transformed into poetry;
The gorgeous and modern Takarazuka song and dance is brought to life in a single stroke.
Jiang Yi used his traditional Chinese literary style of travel,
Describing the unique style of this country one journey after another.
This is "Japanese Painting Records".
--------------------------------------
Flat face; nose without a bridge; black hair with a few streaks of white; eyes slightly slanted, looking down rather than up; wearing a gray coat tailored for fifty British shillings; walks un-English; perhaps an idiot, for he stares for long, unblinking glances at a small maple tree, and even longer at three white ducks on the lake; strolls as if he has been seriously ill and hospitalized for years. —Jiang Yi, "Self-Portrait"
--------------------------------------
He is an international ambassador of Chinese culture, a member of the Royal Society of Arts in the United Kingdom, and a member of the Academy of Arts of the United States National Academy of Sciences.
He is an internationally renowned essayist, painter, poet, and calligrapher, highly praised by Western academia and art circles. Gombrich praised him as "talented and charming."
He had a wide circle of friends, including Yang Lien-sheng, Xu Beihong, Liu Haisu, Mei Lanfang, Xiong Shiyi, Xiao Qian, Ye Junjian, Wu Shichang, D.T. Suzuki, and Watts.
He liked to remain silent during his travels, and put aside factors such as politics and war to depict the scenery and culture of foreign lands. His series of timeless paintings successfully connected Chinese and Western cultures and became classics that have lasted for a long time.
Today, we reread his works published in the middle of the last century, not only to understand the cultural and historical background of a distant country, but also to enjoy the indifferent happiness of walking and observing, to understand the state of mind of culture and life, to re-understand the world around us, and to feel the beauty of life.
