"The Elegy of Desirelessness" begins with a newspaper report about the suicide of a 51-year-old housewife. The narrator, "I," immediately feels compelled to write about her own mother's "simple and clear" story. Born into a Catholic peasant family, her mother was raised in a moral tradition of desirelessness, order, and endurance.
