"New Poetry Collection" and the Emergence of Modern Chinese Poetry (Revised Edition)

This book discusses early "New Poetry Anthologies"—"Experiments," "The Goddess," "Grass," "Winter Night," and "Orchid's Wind"—and reexamines the historical proposition of "the emergence of New Poetry" by examining its publication, reception, compilation, and historical evaluation. The first part, primarily from the perspective of "literary sociology," discusses the formation of a self-sufficient space for the emergence of New Poetry around the May Fourth Movement, touching on the influence of newspapers and periodicals, the appeal of new readerships, the support of new bookstores, and the development of reading routines. The second part focuses on the shaping and pursuit of the historical image and legitimacy of New Poetry during the compilation, reception, and historical positioning of "New Poetry Anthologies," thus questioning the linear historical imagination of the emergence of New Poetry.
This book, originally published in 2005, is based on my doctoral dissertation, "A Study of the 'New Poetry Anthology' and the Emergence of Modern Poetry," which was recognized in 2004 as one of the 100 "National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations" and, upon publication, received the Third Wang Yao Academic Award for Outstanding Young Works. This revision, in addition to streamlining the text and supplementing the material, includes four additional appendices. While outlining the development of modern poetry during its first decade, this revision aims to present a more comprehensive account of the specific cultural and political implications of early modern poetry through case studies.
