Textual Poachers: Television Fans and Participatory Culture
This book is a classic in communication, media analysis, and cultural studies. Routledge published its 20th anniversary edition in 2012. It opposes the view of fans as ignorant, blind "cultural idiots," instead framing them as active consumers and skilled participants in media content, itinerant textual poachers who construct their own culture from borrowed materials, and courageous fighters for cultural power. Television fans are keen to engage in various autonomous symbolic interpretations of media texts, stealing fragments from popular cultural resources to tell their own stories and articulate their own desires. Drawing on the dual perspectives of fan and scholar, the author analyzes the re-creative practices and community ecology of fans of television series such as Star Trek, Blake's Seven, Alien Empire, Valiant, and Twin Peaks through detailed and vivid case studies. Employing ethnographic methods, the book examines fan communities, focusing on their social mechanisms and cultural practices. Based on this, the author discusses the complex relationship between mass media, capitalist consumerism, and audience ideology and agency.
