Mask-wearing days

First published in 1954, the short story collection "Days of the Mask" is the first work by Carlos Fuentes, one of the four leaders of the "Latin American Boom" and a master of Mexican literature. Composed of six short stories bursting with literary and intellectual vitality, the collection offers a broad perspective on human civilization, political allegories of the US-Soviet Cold War, a tragic identification with foreign invasions and enlightened monarchs, a quirky metaphor for the Panama Canal, a reverence for Aztec gods, and a satire of the consumerism that ultimately destroys civilization. The entire work is filled with whimsical ideas, and the opening chapter, "Chac Mool," is one of Fuentes's most acclaimed short stories.
