Persepolis

This book chronicles the author's life from age 10 to 24, specifically between 1980 and 1994. During this period, Iran established the Islamic Republic after the Islamic Revolution, followed by an eight-year war with neighboring Iraq, during which many young boys wearing "keys to paradise" were sent to the battlefield. In 1984, at the age of 14, the author left Iran to study in Austria, while the Iran-Iraq War was in full swing. In 1988, the author returned to Iran and, after a period of despondency, passed national exams to enter university, graduating in 1994 before leaving Iran again. Although this book is a personal growth story, or rather a brief history of the author's private life over fourteen years, observing Iran through the eyes of a child, and then a young girl who returned to Iran after four years abroad and spent another four years there for university, offers unique insights into understanding Iran as a theocratic ideological state.
