In a manor outside the village lived two sisters: the elder sister, Constance, was overly sensitive, constantly anxious, and unable to leave the house; her younger sister, Mary Katherine, was a willful, energetic girl who believed she was a witch and was responsible for buying supplies in the village. In addition, there was their frail, disoriented Uncle Julian, who spent his days drafting a manuscript, trying to understand the tragedy that had occurred six years prior: after one dinner, all other family members were dead. Constance, who had cooked the meal, was believed to be the murderer, but she was acquitted.
Curious villagers constantly came to visit the manor; being at the "crime scene" and seeing the "murderer" made them feel both scared and thrilled. But when their cousin Charles unexpectedly arrived, the trio's peaceful life was completely shattered…
《We Have Always Lived in the Castle》 is Shirley Jackson's last novel. She died of heart failure in 1965, at the age of forty-eight.
