The Birth of Tragedy is the German philosopher Nietzsche's first systematic work on aesthetics and philosophy, written between 1870 and 1871. While discussing the aesthetics of Greek art, Nietzsche expounded many of his own philosophical ideas, completing his reflections on the meaning of life and criticizing modern culture, characterized by Socratic scientific optimism.
