ロング・アフタヌーン
1. The new work of Japanese social mystery master Ye Zhenzhongxian, winner of the Japan Mystery Writers Association Award, the "This Mystery Novel is Amazing" Award, the "Weekly Bunshun" annual mystery novel list, the Japan Mystery Literature Award Newcomer Award, the Watanabe Jun'ichi Literature Award, the Yoshikawa Eiji Literature Newcomer Award, the Bookstore Award, and the Ohyabu Haruhiko Award.2 Ten years after "Scream," I write again about the revenge and rebirth of a "villain." This work focuses on the themes of "gender discrimination" and "sexual violence." To be frank, current Japanese society is created for men, a so-called "patriarchal society." I myself am a beneficiary of patriarchy and cannot remain an outsider. Through this work, I want to re-examine this society. — Ye Zhenzhongxian
3 This work, a work within a work, a work within a work, layers of reversals. If I don't kill them, they will kill me. You who know everything, are you willing to become my accomplice?
"Taro's enlarged penis has countless burn marks. The previous owner used fire to burn it, so I will try to cut it off."
Seven years ago, literary editor Li Feng received a submission titled "Raising a Dog," a novel filled with brutal sadism and a dislike for men. The work was deemed "heavy and demeaning to men" and was not published, and the author disappeared from public view.
Seven years later, Liho received the second submission from the mysterious writer. The story begins with the reunion of two old friends from their school days. The two people with different positions have a disagreement in the conversation, and their murderous intent becomes stronger and stronger.
"Just kill this woman."
As the plot progresses, Li Fan is surprised to see her own reflection in the protagonist of the novel. Even more frightening is that this novel seems to be inextricably linked to the violent "Raising a Dog" seven years ago...
Selected Reader Comments:
A constant feeling of confusion and uncertainty, a fictional novel, a work within a work, forms the beginning of the story. It also harbors a powerful energy, keeping readers eager to read on. The novel, embracing topics like sexism, gender differences, and misogyny, unfolds in a way that defies expectations from the opening.
It was a reading experience that made me feel completely absorbed.
After reading the initial previews that were circulating in bookstores, I was so intrigued that I bought it. The weight of the work within the work was greater than I expected, strangely synchronizing with the protagonist's life. By the end, it felt as if it were being overshadowed by the protagonist's existence, a dreamlike and somewhat confusing feeling. I hope other readers will experience this incredible feeling. I believe no life is without regrets and confusion. There are also past choices that make us want to blame someone. I hope more people realize that even if we can't completely redeem ourselves now, we can still take control of our own lives.
I've read three novels by Mr. Ye Zhenzhongxian in the past, and I was surprised by how different they felt, but I genuinely felt that they were truly wonderful to read. Depending on the reader's age and experience, some parts might be difficult to understand, but for anyone "spending their afternoon," there's a sense of urgency that can bring tears to their eyes. I'm one of them. A certain complicit feeling for Tae and Riho swallowed me up, and then saved me.
