“I became a bad woman in a foolish way, and books saved me.”
📓 20 Great Books by “Outlier Sociologist” Suzumi Suzuki 📓
The self-rescue story of a night hostess who has long battled the world with her body, and a theory on the growth of rebellious girls.
Alternative interpretations of Márquez, Sagan, Cocteau, Miyazaki, Okazaki Kyoko…
💪 Dedicated to every troubled girl 💪
May you read on and always possess the courage and wisdom to refuse to fall.
【Synopsis】
"My mother effortlessly introduced these books to me. It would be wonderful if I could also secretly slip them onto your bookshelf, overflowing with the vast and idle expanse of youth."
Suzumi Suzuki intertwines classic literary works with women's life experiences, recommending 20 works that have significantly impacted her life, including "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," "Bonjour Tristesse," "Memories of My Melancholy Whores," and "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind." Drawing on her multiple identities as a "night hostess," sociologist, journalist, and writer, she fuses themes of sex, money, and freedom with philosophical contemplation. Using the metaphor of "books as a safety rope," she conveys the resilient strength of "expecting with despair," encouraging women to maintain the habit of reading and always possess the courage and wisdom to refuse to fall.

【Reader and Media Reviews】
For those unfamiliar with or unable to imagine the entertainment industry, "The Bad Woman's Bookshelf" is worth reading. Suzuki uses stories to metaphorize reality, wrapping the scene of a drinking party in an allegorical mystery. In Hayao Miyazaki's manga "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," the giant fungal forest "Sea of Corruption" is a reflection of the night world, with toxic substances spread throughout barren cities, and giant insects threatening human safety. However, the Sea of Corruption, regarded as dirty, actually has the effect of purifying human foolishness, just as a prostitute, though in a polluted world, can accept the inescapable suffering of the world. She also loved "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," where Alice falling down the rabbit hole overlapped with her own experience of being scouted and suddenly falling into the night world. Alice boldly used potions to grow and shrink, moving recklessly through a crazy, alien world, much like the daily lives of prostitutes.
— Jiemian News, "Suzumi Suzuki: Between Day and Night, Progress and Backwardness"
Among her many published works, the birth of "The Bad Woman's Bookshelf" is the most special, and its existence is also uniquely significant. Frankly, it doesn't have earth-shattering plots, nor is it a curiosity that uncovers secrets. Instead, it's a reading journal that makes you constantly feel like you've "learned something!" Even though there are often her bold and unique insights, or occasional mentions of her absurd behavior in her youth, it's basically a calmly written review, and you can feel that the author is quite honest in facing herself.

When you're tired of positive thinking and don't know where to go, this book will make you feel that maybe it's okay to stay as you are. I really love this book.

I've read almost all of Suzumi Suzuki's works since her debut, but I don't particularly agree with her beliefs (too opinionated, and her views on love are distorted), and I think she always says strange things. But her literary achievements are profound, and I truly believe she was destined to be a writer!

It's so good that you survived. Thank you for not giving up writing.
