Weird Tales is the latest collection of fiction by Olga Tokarczuk, the 2018 Nobel Prize winner in Literature (awarded in 2019). The collection consists of ten stories: The Green Child in the Forest, the Colorful Cans Left Behind by a Mother, a Professor Accidentally Involved in a Death Case, "I" Visiting My Sister After Transfiguration, a Mysterious Mummy in a Monastery, and Monodix, Who Resurrects Every Year After Death... Each story takes place in a different time and space, from modern Switzerland to Poland over 300 years ago, from Chinese temples to an imagined future. Each story is so bizarre and absurd that it's hard to predict what will happen next. Yet, beneath the absurdity, there seem to be subtle clues to human life.
The collection blends elements of folklore, fairy tales, science fiction, and religious tales to examine Polish history and human life. A year after its publication, Tokarczuk won the Nobel Prize in Literature. The book also includes Tokarczuk's acceptance speech at the Swedish Academy, "The Gentle Storyteller," and her Nobel acceptance speech.
————————————
"Her narrative, imbued with encyclopedic passion and imagination, presents a life form that transcends boundaries"
"She has developed a new way of looking at reality, blending profound realism with fleeting illusions, observing with meticulousness yet reveling in myth, making her one of the most original prose writers of our time. She is a master of shorthand, capturing those who are escaping from their daily lives. She writes what others cannot: 'the aching strangeness of the world.' ... Her style—both stirring and thoughtful—flows through her fifteen or so books."
